MJ Phillips for Merritt City Council

Bio

As a keen observer of Politics for more than 30 years, I have sat on the sidelines wondering how is it that politicians never see the next best idea to solve problems, but are always stumbling on picking the next best worst idea that ends up costing more money in the long run.

My Moral and ethical belief is that we should always speak the truth and act with honor and integrity.

I believe that being a politician is to be in service to everyone without prejudice or bias, we are all human beings first.

We all have prejudices and biases that we have learned in our lives, and unlearning these prejudices and biases takes the will of understanding that what you learned and why you learned to believe this or that prejudice or bias is true is based on ignorance. Ignorance is a Choice, and choosing to stop that ignorance takes the will to learn more information to make a better-educated decision.

I know that I will have to work for the benefit of everyone equally without prejudice or bias.

I spend my time reading the dull boring documents that drive people to quit politics. These are the documents I find interesting and can pick apart using logical arguments and discussion points.

I understand that there will always be fringes that will never be happy, and they seem to scream the loudest while drowning out the other 80% that sit silent wondering what happened to common sense solutions.

When I ask myself why I am doing this, it’s not for the money, the fame or the glory, or the long hours, it is because I believe this City is ready to wake from its slumber and solve the problems that have been created by previous councils.

I believe that we must stand up to resolve the problems using any means conventional and unconventional that are within the boundaries of the law.

Solutions are always able to be found if you are willing to look for them.

This is why I am running, to bring my ideas to the City of Merritt for the benefit of the people here.

Platform

Transparency and Citizen Engagement

The city must prioritize transparency in its operations to build trust and understanding among its citizens. Engaging with the public regarding projects funded by local tax dollars fosters a sense of inclusion and accountability. Citizens should easily access information on city initiatives and expenditures without facing unnecessary obstacles, thereby strengthening their trust in the Mayor and Council’s dedication to serving the community.

City Service Automation

Streamlining city services through automation enhances efficiency and accessibility for residents. Implementing online application processes for licenses and permits reduces bureaucratic barriers and saves citizens time. Setting clear timelines for permit approvals ensures prompt service delivery while maintaining transparency and adherence to regulatory requirements.

Levies and Flood Response

Safeguarding Against Flooding: The city must remain vigilant regarding flood risk management, especially with the uncertainty surrounding federal and provincial funding. In the event of funding shortfalls, the city could find itself financially strained in maintaining levees. Exploring innovative solutions, such as utilizing road infrastructure as raised levees, can potentially mitigate flood impacts and provide additional time for evacuation, thus enhancing community resilience.

Water Conservation Initiatives

Encouraging gardening initiatives and implementing water conservation measures are essential steps in reducing water consumption and promoting environmental sustainability. By incentivizing drip irrigation and adjusting watering schedules to minimize waste, the city can effectively manage its water resources while fostering a culture of environmental responsibility among residents.

Modernizing Sewage Infrastructure

Upgrading sewage infrastructure to include water treatment capabilities is a proactive step towards sustainable water management. By reclaiming and purifying water, the city can reduce reliance on aquifer resources and mitigate environmental impact.

Additionally, harnessing methane off-gassing as renewable energy further contributes to the city’s sustainability objectives while diversifying revenue streams.

Green Waste Management

Enhancing Sustainability: Introducing a green bin initiative not only improves the quality of compost produced but also presents a revenue-generating opportunity for the city. By packaging and selling compost products, the city can capitalize on its waste management efforts while promoting environmental sustainability. This initiative aligns with broader goals of reducing landfill waste and maximizing resource efficiency.

Airport Development

Unlocking Economic Potential: Investing in the expansion and modernization of the Merritt Airport can yield significant economic benefits for the city. Establishing an Airport Authority to oversee operations and upgrades, along with implementing safety enhancements and expanding infrastructure, can attract increased air traffic and stimulate revenue generation. Strategic measures such as acquiring surrounding land for expansion are crucial for the airport’s long-term viability and growth.

Revenue Generation and Fiscal Responsibility

Striving for financial self-sufficiency through revenue-generating initiatives is crucial for the city’s long-term growth and development. By leveraging income generated from recreational facilities and exploring new revenue streams, the city can minimize reliance on increasing property taxes for infrastructure projects and expansion efforts, thus ensuring fiscal stability and affordability for residents.

Land Reclamation & Optimizing Urban Space

The proposal for a Multi-Use Facility presents an opportunity for the city to streamline its civic and entertainment infrastructure, consolidating scattered services into a centralized location. This initiative not only optimizes land use within the downtown core but also offers diverse recreational amenities to residents. Furthermore, the facility’s dual function as an emergency shelter underscores its value in disaster preparedness and community resilience efforts.
